Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness and acceptance based therapy used for a wide variety of expressed symptoms developed by Dr. Steven C. Hayes. ACT has been studied extensively with anxiety disorders, depressive symptoms for example and it has been shown to be as effective as CBT. ACT encourages us to open up to our experience, make space for discomfort and commit to actions tied to personally chosen values.
Including ourselves in the circle of compassion and mindfulness allows us to befriend our inner critic, lean into our emotions and truly understand the imperfections of being human. Using evidence-based therapeutic techniques, we can come to practice self-compassion to allow ourselves to regulate our nervous system to have a more balanced view of the times in our lives that are difficult and challenging. Dr. Kristen Neff and Dr. Christopher Germer created Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC).
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) developed by Dr. Sue Johnson is an empirically based therapy that relies on human connection and understanding that we are all social beings. It is founded on attachment theory and helps distressed individuals, couples and families improve their relationships and deepen their bonds.
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, helps us to understand the power that our autonomic nervous system has in creating actions that are automatic and adaptive. It helps us understand that behaviours are manifestations of our internal nervous systems taking actions to help us survive. Polyvagal Theory also enables us to recognize that we are social beings and need other people and animals to help our nervous system regulate.
